Flat Sea Garden

The Flat Sea Garden is a level expanse of fine gravel or raked stone. This raked stone represents the sea. The edges of the expanse of gravel are raked in wavy patterns to suggest the crashing of waves at the shoreline. Mounded plantings are found in the middle of this "sea." These plantings represent "islands" in the "sea." There is no wall enclosing this style of garden, which is one of the characteristics that separates it from the Sand and Stone Garden. Japanese Black Pine can act as a backdrop for this landscape. Low shrubs, hedges, and small flowering trees, such as Japanese Barberry and Weeping Cherry, are also part of this design.
